Herb Williams Bio (http://www.herbwilliamsart.com):

I am interested in iconic objects that society perceives to fit one role, and then reintroducing them in different subtexts. There are several questions that arise when an object(such as a crayon) that is so often associated with childhood is used to address issues dealing with more adult matters. The sculptures are childlike in their curious approach to the object as icon, but intriguing and satisfying to me in the use of pure color as form. Larger room installations also add the element of playing to the olfactory sense. I hope that this body of work is my most successful in adding to the greater visual dialogue of original art. My intent is to continue to seriously create art that looks at itself unseriously.

Some of my influences are H.C. Westermann, Jasper Johns, Jim Dine, Cai Guo-Qiang, Sandy Skoglund, Liza Lu, David Mach, Charles Ray, Magritte, Duchamp, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Robert Rauschenburg, Banksy, and Ai Weiwei.

I am the only individual in the world with an account with Crayola. I get these colors individually packed 3000 to a case. I cut down the sticks to the length I need by hand with either double guillotine cigar cutters or large breed dog nail clippers. I then bond the paper, not the wax, to a form I have carved or cast, completely enveloping the form. Lately I have been casting the completed crayon sculptures in a silicone jacket mold with a two-part epoxy resin and then painting the resin sculpture to look like the original, for a small edition. The sculptures beg to be touched, so when they are cast it makes the handling of them that much easier. (from http://www.herbwilliamsart.com)

Entry for the 2008 Next Star Artist Competition has Closed

May 30 Update

Due to the overwhelming number of entries (way more than I expected) that I received for the Next Star Artist competition, there will be a delay with the announcement of the ten finalists. Instead of the ten finalists being announced on the 30th of May, the ten finalists will now be announced on the 8th of June. Thanks again to everyone that entered.

Nicholas Forrest

May 26 Update:

On behalf of all the people involved with the Next Star Artist competition I would like to thank all the artists that entered the competition and all the people that supported the competition. Attracting the support of artists and art market professionals for a new and radical art competition was never going to be an easy task but having received over 220 entries I can say, without a doubt, that the level of interest and support has been far beyond what I would have ever hoped for. There have of course been those that have expressed a negative or sceptical opinion of the Next Star Artist concept which has just increased my determination to make the competition a success. I would not have started this competition if I was not totally sure that it would be of benefit to the winner and to the wider artistic community. My past experiences with the promotion of artists has given me the information, knowledge and tools that I need to be able to replicate the positive results that I have had in the past.

Now that entries have closed, ten finalists will be chosen from the entries received and announced on the 30th of May. Once the ten finalists have been announced the judging of the ten finalists by a variety of art world personalities and art market professionals will begin (30th May to 20th June) to determine who the winner will be. The artist that the judges deem to be the best entry (judged according to judging criteria) will be named the winner on the 27th of June.

Best of Luck,

Nicholas Forrest

“The reason that I created the Next Star Artist competition is that I come across so many fantastic artists who either do not have the skills to promote themselves or are just not in a position to take advantage of the promotional opportunities that are available. I have undertaken extensive research on the promotional opportunities available to artists and have successfully promoted several artists online using various different techniques. The success that I have had has been extremely encouraging and has given me the knowledge and tools needed to implement the Next Star Artist competition. I am extremely excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the world art community and wish all the entrants the best of luck.”

  8. Well, it looks like a great contest but just not the avenue I wish to approach it from. With my disabilities it is too frustrating trying to sort everything out to enter. But I will add a link to it in a couple of places to help pass the word.

  9. If you have any questions as to your eligibility please just enter anyway. The entry criteria are really only a basic guide and should not be taken as set in stone

Don’t worry if you don’t have a major work to donate, enter the competition anyway. If you do win we can come to some sort of agreement regarding the donation of an artwork at a later date

  16. who chooses if the work qualifies as major?you or me?

  17. Dear Munibah,

The artwork to be donated by the winner will be chosen by both the winning artist and myself. I basically consider a major work of art to be an artwork that an artist would use as a representative piece.

  32. How many entries can each artist submit?

  33. Hi, I found your blog via Google while searching for Edward Norton Gallery and your post regarding Art Market Blog with Nicholas Forrest http://www.artmarketblog.com looks very interesting for me.

  34. Dear Marlene,
Because the winner will be judged on their commercial potential and not just the artworks that they submit only one entry per artist will be accepted

    Nicholas Forrest

  35. Commercial potential ? Why ? :)

  36. I love this idea and will look into it a little more. One question, dose the work we enter need to be for sale or can it be pieces we are keeping or have already sold. ?

  37. Dear Dawn,

Thanks for the question. There are no restrictions on the works you can enter other than they have to have been created by you. You can enter pieces for sale, that are already sold or that you are keeping, it is up to you

    Nicholas Forrest

  38. Hi Nicholas,

I’ve read almost all of the reply above. Can we submit 3 as initial mention on 2nd of april or just one piece as in the april 26 to Marlene?

    Thank you in advance

  39. Dear Nikita,

As per the entry criteria above:

Each entry must include digital images and details of three works in jpg format (minimum 72dpi and no more than 2mb each)

    Regards,
    Nicholas Forrest

  40. Hi, what is the address to apply?
    thanx,
    mira

  41. We are all in the gutter. Only some of us are looking at the stars

  42. Hello NIcholas Forrest,

Few months ago my partner has finished a huge canvas, titled, “90 days from B to C”, because of the size and the details within the canvas ( its 182 x 487 cms and is saturated with minute details, which are lost when uploaded on the net) it is difficult to get one whole picture of it to show the details. How can he submit his entry?

  43. Dear Filomina,

The Next Star Artist competition is going to be judged more on overall marketability as opposed to a single piece of art so the pictures of the artist’s work are not that important. Maybe you could send one pic of the whole work and some detail shots

    Regards,
    Nicholas Forrest

  44. Dear Mira,

    See http://www.nextstarartist.com for entry details

    Regards,

    Nicholas Forrest

  45. Mr. Forrest,
Let me begin by saying thank you for having such a contest for us the great in numbers artist. That have been in one shape or form all our lives since we were 8 to 10 yrs. old. My father told me that art will not pay bills. So he never supported me in my art to much. My Grandmother however did with pencils and sketch pads. My desire to paint however had to wait til recently, I became permanently disabled from work because of my exposure to chemicals in Desrt Storm.
I have taught myself to draw with graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolor (a little), and now working with oils.
Although I don’t concider myself a so called PRO. I do concider myself a Natural Artist and I cannot keep a picture very long at all. They sell to quick. I take pictures of them, I can send you some of these if you wish and I did make like trace over sketches so I could redo the pictures if I wanted to, I did write that I reserved the copy write on the back of each painting and gave each a number except the pencil drawings. My Grandmother has most of those, she got me supplies in exchange for some pictures. I should have three before the deadline finished one eagle 24×36 oil, and One Native American Chief in Graphite, and Ill use the one Native American father and son Lessons on the Bow that is finished to enter. write me an e-mail to where I can send some pics of my work to let you see it . And even if I don’t get to enter I still wish to make a donation of art on the competitions behalf of my fellow artist everywhere. Thank You for Your Time.
    G. W. Sparks

  46. Dear G.W.Sparks,

Thanks for the kind email. To enter you need to send a cv, bio and pictures to nextstarartist@gmail.com
I look forward to seeing your work

    Regards,

    Nicholas Forrest
    artmarketblog.com

  47. One of your criteria mentions: Having been the recipient of limited previous grants and awards. I’ve had a few exhibitions but have never entered a contest. As for grants – like the Canadian Arts Council requires 3 years minimum to even apply as an emerging artist. I’ve only been diligenlty jumping into the art world for the past two years (no grants, no awards).

What exactly is having yet to achieve sufficient market recognition? I did exhibit at The Artist Project in Chicago at Merchandise Mart. in April 2008 and I will be on their website until next year.

Can I still apply, am I still eligible? Im still a struggling artist, looking to promote my art.

  48. Sounds like a great opportunity. Hope I qualify

  49. Dear Towanna,

Please still submit your application as the entry criteria are only a guide. All applications will be considered.

    Regards,
    Nicholas Forrest

  51. Very perceptive Mr. Koons – I guess the way to REALLY become a star artist is to always read the fine print. Look forward to enjoying your work on the roof of the Met again soon!

  52. This is a great opportunity for reaching to another level as an emerging artist. This competiton removes many of the barriers that you usually encounter being a self starter aiming at being active on a professional level in their artmaking. So thanks to Nicholas for giving us all an opportunity that is so open and encouraging to enter.

  53. My ideas for painting come from the deepest parts of my soul. Painting is a doorway to the world of mysteries. It gives me wings and enables me to see beyond the ordinary life and world.

  57. Dear Mike,
